Short Essay Writing Projects: History 121

The purpose of these short essays is to give you experience using original sources. I will return each essay within a week of receiving it and will offer comments and suggestions for improvement. You should respond to my comments on subsequent essays. Points will be assigned based on the quality of each essay.
For each assignment, select one project, based on one original document. Essays should be about one page, and the essence of each assignment is to explain in your own words what the document means. You do not have to create context for the document any more than is necessary to convey its meaning. The point of these exercises is for you to do a careful reading of each one. Sometimes the meanings are obvious—sometimes there is a deeper meaning, as you may learn.
