Background
James Madison is neither the best known nor most revered of the Founding Fathers, but his contributions to the creation of the American nation might be considered the most important of any founding father, with the exception of George Washington. Existing under the shadow of Thomas Jefferson, his friend and mentor, Madison is now emerging as perhaps the most original thinker and astute political organizer of his generation.
